To help you with your new purchase, we would like to offer some instructions and useful tips:

Question: How do I insert the wick into the bottle?

  • Remove plastic wrap from top and bottom of wick.
  • Slide the wick assembly up to the top of the wick leaving ¼ to ½ inch out of the bottle.
  • Rubber washer rings should fit snugly into the neck of the bottle.
  • See Kit Instructions for more details including photos.

Question: Why doesn’t the wick assembly fit in my bottle?

  • You may need to remove one or both of the rubber washer rings from the brass wick body to fit it snugly inside the neck of the bottle.

Question: Why doesn’t the flame stay lit?

  • We recommend filling the bottle 90% with fuel so you don’t need to optimize flame. If the bottle is less than 1/2 full, the flame may start to suffer since it will be a long draw to the top of the wick.
  • Make sure to pre-soak the wick for at least 30 minutes before first use. This is very important and one of the main reasons why torch lamps do not seem to work for some people.
  • It is possible that the seal is too tight. Try leaving the rubber o-rings off the brass wick holder to let some air enter the bottle.
  • Wicks may require trimming over time if they are not burning properly. Simply, twist and push the wick through the collar and trim to the bottom of the used area. Leave ½ to 3/4 inch exposed out of the bottle.

Question: Why does the torch produce a lot of smoke?

  • Please be sure the wick is completely saturated before lighting it. If you light the wick before it is completely saturated, the wick will produce excessive smoke. We recommend soaking the wick for at least 30 minutes before the first lighting.

Question:  What fluids should I use in the bottle for the lamps?

  • Use a COMBUSTIBLE fuel such as tiki torch oil, not a FLAMMABLE fuel such as kerosene, gasoline, acetone or alcohol.
  • Do NOT use any kind of cooking oils such as vegetable oil, canola oil, etc.
  • Also, NEVER mix one type of fuel with water or another fuel.
  • Question: How long should I expect the wick to last? With proper care the wick will last for many lightings. Do not let the wick run dry after use - doing so will significantly limit the lifetime of the wick.
